Twenty refugee families from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia residing in the territory of the city of Smederevo have finally found their home. The keys to the apartments that were built as part of the ninth sub-project of the Regional Housing Program were handed over.
This was a great day for all the beneficiaries who have been patiently waiting for years for their housing issue to be resolved. And they did.
The event in Smederevo was attended by State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nemanja Starović, Deputy Mayor of Smederevo Marija Markovic Stavrić, representative of the Delegation of the European Union to Serbia Leoneta Pajer, Director of the Public Sector Projects Implementation Unit Dušan Kovačević and Commissioner for Refugees and Migration Vladimir Cucić.
"Your life was not easy at all, and although you encountered many obstacles in life, you did not give up. You have proven that you are persistent and brave, and the state of Serbia, led by President Aleksandar Vucic, has once again selflessly shown that it does not give up on its citizens," said the Director of the Public Sector Projects Implementation Unit, Dušan Kovačević.
The Regional Housing Programme is a joint multi-year programme of Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Croatia, which aims to provide durable housing solutions for the most vulnerable refugee families in the region.
It is implemented with the support of the OSCE and UNHCR and is funded by the European Union, the United States, Germany, Norway, Switzerland, Italy, Denmark, Turkey, Luxembourg, Spain, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia.
